Overgrown and dull, this island bed needed a textural and colorful makeover. A transformation using a few native plants left our client hopeful about the future.
When we first started to discuss this project, our client wanted to be able to incorporate native plant material. Native plant material is described as plants grown in the US and are naturally adapted to our climate – they can be trees, shrubs or perennials. Native plants are a great tool to use because; plants and animals have evolved together and become reliant on one another for survival, native plants have developed their own natural defense systems for combating pests, so in turn less pesticide applications need to be used, and they are the foundation of our natural ecosystems and protect biodiversity.
The previous plant material completely blocked any view our client had. Below are a few of the plants we included in our design:
Clethra alnifolia 'Hummingbird' – Sweetpepper Bush
Fothergilla gardenii – Dwarf Forthergilla
Viburnum nudum 'brandywine' -- Smooth Witherod
Echinacea purpurea – Purple Coneflower
