The first day of winter was 12/22, weird though – as it’s felt more like fall. The temperatures have been hanging around the 50’s and 60’s. We even had a little surprise on Christmas. Instead of a white Christmas, which everyone hopes for, it felt more like spring! I’ve even seen people wearing shorts while holiday shopping – it doesn’t get stranger than that.
As I’ve been driving around over the past week and noticed a lot of Cherry trees in bloom, Forsythia blooming and bulbs surfacing. The temperature degree-days have definitely thrown off the plant’s natural cycle. The question I’m hearing a lot is; will this negatively affect my plants? For home gardeners, most likely not, however, this might have an affect on commercial fruit growers.
If we get a gradual cool down over the upcoming weeks, the plants will adjust fine. The problem comes in when it quickly goes from the 70’s to 20’s within a few days. Luckily, this hasn’t happened. The weather pattern is showing a slow cool down over the upcoming weeks, as we move into what we know as ‘winter’.
For now, just enjoy the warmer temperatures while you can! Get out over the weekends and enjoy yard work, before freezing rain and snow inevitably come knocking on our doors. Until next time ..
